A day in the life of....

On my awesome husband's suggestion, I decided to chronicle a day in the life of none other than me. I figured it'd be funny to see it all written down, since I go through my days with nary a thought that my experiences might be curious to someone else. So here it goes....a chronicle of a Tuesday.

I woke up early because I went to bed early (as in 10:30 pm)....I was wide awake when Gardner woke up hungry at 7am. After giving him his breakfast, I jumped back into bed beside my wonderful mate to eat cereal and watch the Today show (from where we get all of our national and international news in the mornings now).

Ken was off to work soonafter, and I realized just as he was about to go that I had not gotten his lunch prepared. "Oh, I'm going out today for a work interview," he said to reassure me. I then jumped into the shower in order to (hopefully) be completely ready to leave the house when Gardner woke up from his mini morning nap.

I was 99.9% ready when he did. After rummaging through the house for his carseat, blanket, toys to keep him occupied that hang on his carseat, his shoes, and my car keys (oh, and of course, my Dave Ramsey envelope), I was happily on the way to Publix for the remaining groceries for the week, my having gotten half of them when I was at EarthFare in Greenville on Monday.

As their slogan suggests, shopping at Publix was indeed truly a "pleasure," and I reminded myself that it is worth the extra $3.00 or so I spend weekly there just to have the cashiers be courteous and the stock people helpful, and oh, of course, the bagger calling my son by NAME and wishing him and me a good afternoon as he shut the Jeep trunk.

Hurriedly home again, unloading at least the cold or frozen items before Gardner fusses for his lunch. After playing a haphazard game of "can-I-get-most-of-the-rice-cereal-in-his-mouth-before-he-comes-unglued," I rock and sing to him, then put him down for another nap. Ahhh. A few more minutes to myself.

I prepare a quick BLT for lunch, then sit at the table and balance the checkbook while I eat. The cats are scrambling at my feet, reminding me they're not fed yet. I dump some food in their dish (how do they eat that stuff?) and then make the bed and get some emailing done.

Gardner's up again, and little do I know, he's up for several hours (he fights naps some days). I run and drop off two bill payments, go by the health food store for dried banana chips and papaya, and then go buy a fresh pineapple at Bilo since they're cheap this week. Then on to the library to drop off some books, then home again.

I quick-cut the beef, peppers and onions for our dinner of fajitas, and store them in the fridge for quick preparation later. It's 4:00....where has my day gone? Gardner and I have a few cherished moments to sit together in the den and play with his myriad of toys, while I thumb through Sunday's paper one last time before tossing it out (scanning once more for good sales or coupons, mainly....oh, and checking to see if anyone I went to high school with got married last weekend. Does anyone else out there do that???).

Ken bounds in at 5:45, and I am getting supper on. The kitchen is so noisy due to the whirr of the dehydrator running and the fish tank's filter buzzing. I have salsa/merengue music playing to set the "mood" for our latino-inspired dinner (again, does anyone else do that?). Gardner goes down without a fuss at 6, and Ken and I sit and enjoy a leisurely meal together.

He tells me about his day....funny things said, embarrassing moments at the office, upcoming plans and series titles, and his agenda for the rest of the work week. "And tell me about your day!" he asks. I am suddenly too exhausted to open my mouth and let the words spill out. "It was good. Busy, but good."

One thing's for sure, though I'm at home, I am never bored. There is no time for boredom. Especially for self-starters like me whose planner's to-do list is probably longer than a CEO's. Ahh, the secret little thrill of crossing off items that are completed. And of course, the biggest thrills remain at the end of each and every day....the smiling face of my husband as he enters the house, and the smiles of my son as he and I have special moments together during these hectic days.
