Five years ago today....part VIII

We got up early and packed to leave the inn. Another breakfast in the solarium: Cinnamon-apple waffles with fruit, cranberry muffins, and chocolate chip bread. We (of course) stopped for more Ben & Jerry's ice cream in Waterbury, then we traveled on to Stowe, Vermont to see the Trapp Family Lodge. It is the lodge that the Trapp family (who inspired the movie "The Sound of Music") started upon their arrival to the United States fifty or more years ago. We agreed that we'd try to lodge there next time we visited the region.

We stopped into the Cabot Creamery to see how they make butter and cheese.....they had samples everywhere you looked! To this day, I am a dedicated purchaser of Cabot cheese and butter. Its purity and simplicity is unparalleled. We bought a huge baguette and some fresh cheese, and ate it in the car as our lunch that day. Mmmm....life couldn't get much better!

We headed towards our final destination, Boston. On our way, we took a detour to go through Salem, the location of the famous witch trials of the 1600s. It was an eerie town. Much of its original architecture had been left untouched; we'd never seen anything like it. The whole city seemed evil, however....."real" witches were everywhere, and tours were all over the place for graveyards and museums, such as the Salem Witch Museum. We didn't visit this particular one, but we opted instead for a wax museum showcasing some of the famous people from that area, including Nathaniel Hawthorne.

We arrived in Boston mid-afternoon and checked into the Westin Copley Place. We immediately left to go visit the Boston Aquarium. This was one of the highlights of our trip. We stood for hours and laughed at the cute animals, especially the penguins.

For dinner, we wanted some authentic Italian food. Well, we found something pretty close at Vinny Testa's. One order of spaghetti was more than enough for four people....and the meatballs were tennis ball-sized! We rounded off our meal with a 12-inch-diameter slab of tiramisu, the best tiramisu we'd ever tasted. These Italians know how to do food, and do it BIG.
